Turning In Place – Dave Barriger

Dave works with wood turning students at the level they are turning and helps them to achieve their individualized goals for three days. This workshop is designed for the new turner, as well as for his returning students. Material fee is for tools and wood. Students should bring a lathe, or arrange to rent one from Dave if needed ($25).

All workshops will begin at the time listed next to the day they are offered unless there are exceptions noted within the workshop description. There is a possibility that you may be able to take two workshops within the same day/time period .

(Example: Introduction to Needle Tatting is from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. on Thursday and Warping Back to Front begins at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. You would be able to sign-up for both classes)

Miniature Burden Basket – Lynn Keil

This twined basket is loosely based on the baskets used in several cultures to gather nuts and berries. Legend has it that you hang one by the entrance of your home and symbolically place the day’s burdens there. You will either deal with the burdens or they may magically disappear. Using small reed and a variety of fibers, your basket may be embellished with personal treasures such as: charms, beads, bell, etc.

Needle Felting – Jody Cosby

Participants will make a needle felted snowman, complete with scarf, to use on a card or as an ornament.

Magic Inside Out Clay Beads – Audrey Smith

These mirror image (or Rorschach) clay beads or pendants are made from scrap clay and/or bits of unused canes. Students may also use pieces of new clay to create something fascinating. Supplies are not provided. Bring all of your clay scraps, 1 oz. black clay and any other new color blocks of your choice, clay blade & smooth work board for shaping and cutting. Bring a pasta machine if you have one.

Entrelac Knitted Felted Purse ( Part 1) – Barbara Pietruk

Entrelac, which means interlaced, is a knitting technique that creates a basket weave look to knitted squares using a short row method. There is NO sewing involved. We will knit a small purse in the round with several colors of worsted weight wool yarn. The purse will then be felted. Note: It is required that students already know how to cast on, knit and purl comfortably. We will learn the cable cast on, picking-up stitches, and decreasing. The more advanced student can try a knitting backwards technique on the short rows. We will also try a quick way to knit your I-cord handles. Instructor will have some knitting needles and yarn for sale or bring your own stash. Type of yarn to be used will be in the confirmation packet. This class will be continued (part 2) on Friday morning.

Introduction to Needle Tatting – Jane McLean

I will demonstrate the simple technique and teach the basics of making the rings on the needle, the ease of taking out mistakes, how to read a pattern and use a finished item. You will need No. 1 or 5 needles, which may be ordered from me a month before conference for $6. Thursday, 1:00–5:00 p.m. continued (note exceptions)

Dichroic Glass Pendants – Betty Schmidt

Each student will be able to choose a 1 ½ “ by 2 ½” piece of fusible glass background which can be ground or cut and shaped. An array of small dichroic glass is then mounted on the background and covered in clear glass. This will be placed in the kiln and fused after class and ready for you to pick-up the next day. We can make additional pieces as class time allows. Students need to bring a glass cutter with an oil wheel.

Warping Back to Front - Sandy Carr

A hands-on demonstration of how quick and easy this method of warping your loom can be. We’ll discuss steps in making your warp, and loom tricks that also help to make this easier.

Palmetto Frond Basket – Jan Beckenbach

Care and Maintenance of Spinning Wheels – Joan Ruane

Like any piece of equipment, the more you understand the spinning wheel and how it operates, the better the yarn you make. Like any equipment, it should have a certain amount of maintenance to keep it running properly and most efficiently. Joan has been called “the wheel doctor” by many of her students. Students are encouraged to bring their wheels, but it isn’t necessary. Handout provided.

Precious Metal Clay – Carol Boyd

Precious Metal Clay, also known as art clay, is made of a combination of fine silver particles plus a binder and water. When fired, it becomes fine silver .999. The clay is handled just like pottery clay; it is rolled, stamped, and cut with knife or small cutters. We will be making two items. They can be buttons, earrings, tubes and pendants.

Learn the basics of making recycled paper – preparing the pulp, coloring it, storing it and using it to create unique pieces of handmade paper. Class includes discussion of necessary equipment and supplies.

Gourmet Weaving - Beyond the Recipe – Ramona Abernathy–Paine

Take charge of every aspect of your weaving and you will achieve exactly the fabric you imagine. Through this workshop, take control of your loom. Learn to manipulate a draft and to adapt it to yarns of your choice. Explore dynamic ways to use blocks when designing fabric. Shibori Techniques – Kay Callahan

This workshop will be an introduction to three Shibori techniques: stitched, folded and clamped, and pole wrapped (arashi). There will be time to do samples, as well as selecting one technique to produce a scarf.

Personal Clay Color Pallet – Patsy Monk

Color is a personal issue! Students will develop a pallet with their favorite primary colors. Using a choice of magenta, yellow and blue, we will create a rainbow. The reproducible magic of color will be at our command. You will need to bring 3 blocks of clay, a pasta machine, and other clay related equipment.

Beginning Tatting – Jane McLean

Tatting is the art of knotted lace making used for edgings, doilies, bracelets and embellishments. Students will learn the basic movements and make rings, picots and edgings. The steel shuttle will be used in this class. If you need me to order you one, contact me at least a month before conference. Price will be about $3.

Fake Ikat – Berna Lowenstein

Real Ikat is an ancient, time consuming technique of tying and dying yarns before they are woven, to give interesting color patterns in Plain-Weave fabric. You will learn how to fake Ikat using a painted warp technique. Berna will bring pre-wound warps, and everything you need to complete a fake Ikat warp for inclusion in a scarf. All you have to do is show up and have fun.

The ancient art of Japanese braid making. This class is an introduction to flat braid with instructions to make a zig-zag pattern (a striking embellishment that can be used on clothes, purses, or jewelry). You will need a flat foam disc and 12 bobbins. These may be ordered from me a month before conference for $12.50

Temari Balls – Ellen Turner

Temari is a 1000 year old craft from Japan, producing a kaleidoscopic patterned ball by embroidering with colorful threads. If you are unfamiliar with temari balls, take a look at www.temarikai.com. In this class, we will cover a styrofoam ball by winding with yarn and then sewing thread. Lovely cotton and metallic threads will be used to create the embroidered patterns.

Translating Written Knitting Patterns Into Graphs – Lorna Gillespie

You will learn to graph your written (lace and more complex) knitting patterns. You will be provided a printout of commonly used symbols, books of patterns to choose from, and a practice session. This course (or the knowledge) is a pre-requisite for the workshop, Knitting With Beads.

Tahkli (Supported Spindle) Spinning – Joan Ruane

A takli is a small metal support spindle that is widely used in India. In fact, Gandhi required boys in school to learn how to spin on the takli spindle as well as his parliament. The spindle is small, easy to carry and you can spin all kinds of short staple fibers aw well as silk on it. This mini-workshop will teach the basic techniques of using this support spindle with several different types of fibers. Instructor will supply the fiber and spindles will be available to use in class. Spindles will be for sale at the end of the class.

Beginning Tapestry – Linda Stevens-Sloan

This workshop covers the basic techniques of tapestry weaving: plain weave, meet and separate, vertical and horizontal lines, spots, Rya; and building shapes. This can be done on a floor loom, table loom, frame loom or simple commercial cardboard loom. The choice is yours. The yarns, warp and weaving equipment will be provided by the student. (Cardboard loom can be purchased from instructor for $2.)

Intermediate Tatting – Jane McLean

Learn the reverse tatting techniques, closings for bracelets or around ornaments, and how to make the hen and chicken pattern. Steel shuttles will be needed.

Ruffled Beaded Bracelet – Jan Beasley

Make a cute ruffley bracelet. This is a quick, easy project for anyone. Bring your favorite size 11 tube of beads and other beading supplies.

Beaded Crochet – Barbara Pietruk

Bead Crochet ropes are spiraled crocheted tubes of beads used as necklaces, bracelets, purse handles, key fobs and lariats since early Victorian times. Find out how easy this technique really is once you have a “hands-on” lesson in the difficult first few rounds of getting started. This is by far the best “traveling” beading technique. It is required that students know how to crochet. Although we only use single crochet and slip stitches, you need to be able to recognize the stitches and maintain tension while crocheting in the round. The object of this class is to mainly focus on perfecting the starting of a rope of your own. Student supplies of crochet yarn and beads will be given with class confirmation letter.

Tassel Making – Peggy DiNegro

There will be a class discussion of history, uses, anatomy, tools what works (or not, and why), books about tassels, etc. Learn to securely tie off the neck, then create an easy tassel with fat yarns, followed by a daintier tassel trimmed with beads. For those students fast and fanatical, supplies will be available for an elegant, silky tassel made from rayon sewing thread - $1 extra for each rayon tassel.

Beginning Inkle Weaving – Joan Ruane

This portable loom is ideal for making belts, straps, and bands. A simple belt will be made in the morning session and a more elaborate belt will be designed by each student in the afternoon. Students need an open-faced inkle loom and belt shuttle (contact instructor if you want her to bring one for you)

Faux Opals In Polymer Clay – Patsy Monk

We will create opals that mimic the real ones so well, that only you will know. Real opals are heat sensitive and can be cracked or chipped - not our opals! Come to class and be prepared to leave with jewels that could make nature blush. Students will need pasta machine, some clay, a heat embossing gun and other clay tools.

Surface Design For Clay – Sue Kenaston

We will be making small decorative pieces, using a wide variety of things that will let you experiment with all sorts of surface techniques. We will be experimenting with molds, texture sheets, stamps, antiquing, distressing, acrylic paint, mica powders and permanent inks. Eight to ten 2oz. packets of Premo Sculpey III in a variety of light and dark colors, two 2oz. pkg. of white or beige or ivory and black, a pasta machine, and other clay related equipment. If you have some stamps, cookie cutters or texture tools, bring them to share.

Learn a simple bead embroidery technique to set a stone or glass cabochon. Included will be instruction on making fringe or picot edging. Your piece may be finished as a pendant or pin. Knitting With Beads – Lorna Gillespie

Pre-requisite: knowledge of reading graphed knitting patterns. (See Translating Written Knitting Patterns Into Graphs – Friday afternoon.) You will learn 4 different ways to enhance your knitting with beads, from the complex lace bead knitting, to making designs with beads on a simple surface. This course is for the knitter who knows how to read and make knitting graphs, do increases, decreases, and cast on and off without assistance. Knowledge and practice with lace knitting or knitting lace is a bonus. Student will need yarn, beads, #1, 0, 00, 000, 0000 or 00000 knitting needles (depending on size of beads and yarns) and other related knitting supplies.

Bring a variety of bead sizes to explore different ways of making a beaded fringe. If you have a scarf (or some other items) you’d like to work on, select bead colors that will enhance this embellishment. I will bring some beads, but you’ll need needles and beading thread.

Did you know that flax fiber (that is unspun linen) sticks to itself when wet and can form a flat, “felted paper”? In this class you’ll learn how easy it is to form this paper and new ways to make the result more durable. We’ll make several sheets of paper with a variety of embellishments. The paper can be folded and shaped, cast onto objects, sewn or drawn on, even put on a garment. You can also make narrow strips and weave them!

Designing Bronson and Swedish Laces – Berna Lowenstein

Everyone always thinks of Huck lace as being the IT lace, but Bronson Lace is just as pretty, and much easier to design, especially if you are a beginning weaver. Join me as I explain how to design Bronson lace and it’s cousin, Swedish lace. This is the perfect seminar for beginning weavers who want to branch out from Plain Weave and Twill, or experienced weavers who have never tried Bronson Lace. Participants must know how to read a weaving draft.
