Learn the basics of this versatile weave structure using various treadling methods, both
traditional and non-traditional. Students will work on their own looms and learn how to use
profile drafts and blocks to design their own patterns. Barb’s been weaving for 30 years
and teaching for more than 15 years; and her focus is primarily on rugs and functional

This once-popular technique makes extremely durable and beautiful rugs using fabric for
both warp and weft. Twining on a simple frame produces an astonishing variety of patterns
not found in most other rag rugs. Help preserve this vanishing folk art while mastering
twining techniques that can also be applied to other materials. Making hot-pad samplers
in class will give you the expertise to design and create full-sized rugs at home.

(Breaking the Rules and Solving the Problems)
Level: Able to warp a loom Materials Fee: $35 (warp provided)
Working on your own loom, each student will weave samples and a project with a mixed fiber
warp chosen to explore problems that occur with difficult and unusual fibers. Designing and
making these warps will be covered through demonstration and hands-on exercises. Methods
professional designers use to determine hand, drape and suitability of the finished cloth
will be discussed. Everyone will come away with ideas to add a dash of pizzazz to his/her
next project.
