OUTREACH AT CONFERENCE 2010

We again were able to obtain some wonderful work from fiber artists from around the world. We had our Guatemala pieces from Mayan Hands and Upavim as well as additional pieces from our new source, Alternatives. Alternatives provided work from Venezuela, Mexico, Ghana, Thailand, India, Cambodia, Peru, Afghanistan, Kashmir and other African nations to name a few.

Evidentially the shoppers felt as excited about the pieces as we did since they purchased a total of $2779.41 worth of goods in support of the artists involved. Many of the items there were "one of a kind - not to be repeated" pieces simply because, sadly, the work is no longer being done. Too many of these treasured artists are not able to find apprentices to carry on some of the processes represented.

Outreach also works in trying to support the Navajo weavers. Their needs range from supplies to continue their work as well as providing food and clothing for their families. Financial donations help them the most so I'm glad to report that the cash we collected for them was supplemented by a donation from the FTWG Board to equal $80. If you'd like more information about this group, contact member Susan Cook

If you missed out this year, we'll be ordering pieces for next year from the same sources. Thank you, those of you who supported our endeavors. See you next year at Conference 2011.

Our Future Fiber Artists

If you are a weaver, basket maker or fiber artist who has the opportunity to work with young people, I encourage you to offer the children with whom you work the opportunity for recognition at our FTW Conference in March.

As you work with children let them know you would like to borrow some of their completed projects for display at our conference. Each youth who has an entry displayed will receive a ribbon or certificate of recognition.

This will honor your commitment to our future fiber artists as well as the work of the young artist. We would also like to recognize a classroom teacher who has created an environment that fosters the fiber arts. Let us know what you discover as you work in our schools. You can contact me at jfurci@gmail.com or 321-383-3037.

P.S. At the FTW Conference in 2008, it was suggested work of challenged adults also be displayed and recognized. If you would like to organize this activity, please let our president or me know for presentation to our board of directors.
